Golf as a Family Sport: Why Golf Works for Young and Old
Why golf connects generations – and how to start together.
A sport that grandma, parents and grandchildren can do together – really together, not just side by side? The list gets short quickly. Golf is at the top. Here is why golf may be the best family sport, and how to start together on the Lower Rhine.
The secret: everyone plays their own game – yet together
In football, 70-year-old grandpa no longer plays against the 15-year-old grandchild. In golf he does – and it even gets exciting. The handicap system makes it possible: it balances skill levels so beginners and experienced players compete fairly. Everyone plays at their level, everyone plays together. That is what makes golf unique as a family sport.
Shared time that is truly shared
A round of golf takes three to four hours – no screens, no rush, plenty of time to talk between shots. Many families tell us that conversations happen on the course that get lost at home. And you are outdoors together, moving, experiencing nature – at the Niep even in the middle of a nature and water conservation area.
What children and teenagers learn from golf
Golf teaches values every family would sign off on: patience (the ball does not always fly where it should), honesty (you count your own strokes – including the bad ones), respect and consideration (etiquette is part of the game) and concentration. Sports scientists also value golf as a coordinative challenge with a low injury risk.
And the grandparents?
For the older generation, golf is often the sport that remains when others become too demanding: easy on the joints, in fresh air, at your own pace. Many of our most active members are past 70 – and some of them stride past the younger ones with remarkable poise.
How to start as a family
1. A joint trial course: try it together – parents, kids, happily three generations. We provide equipment, nobody needs experience.
2. Individual paths: afterwards everyone goes at their own pace – the youth in our junior section, the adults in the permit course.
3. Shared rounds: with the permit you play together – a family hobby for life. Family tournaments and events included.
The honest answer to the cost question
Yes, golf for four sounds like a lot at first. But trial courses are affordable, juniors pay heavily reduced fees, and equipment can be fully rented at the start. Compared to four ski passes plus gear, a family golf start is surprisingly down to earth.
