Your First Golf Tournament: How to Play Relaxed as a Beginner
Your first tournament is exciting – but no reason to be nervous. Here is how to be well prepared.
At some point the moment comes when you do not just play for fun but sign up for your first tournament. Exciting? Sure. Difficult? Not at all. In a club, tournaments are the nicest way to meet others and test your game. Here is how your first tournament works – and how to stay relaxed.
Do I need experience for this?
You need your course permission and an official handicap, nothing more. Club tournaments and Stableford competitions in particular are explicitly meant for all abilities. Your handicap evens out the differences, so beginners get a fair chance too.
Stableford: the beginner-friendly format
Most beginner tournaments are played as Stableford. Instead of counting every shot, you collect points per hole. If a hole goes badly, you simply pick up and move on – that keeps the pace up and takes off the pressure. A big advantage over stroke play, where one bad hole can weigh on the whole round.
How to register
You will find upcoming tournaments in the tournament calendar on our website. You can usually register online via the booking system or directly at the office. On tournament day, arrive about 30 minutes early: pay the entry fee, collect your scorecard, do a little putting – done.
The most important tips for tournament day
Play your normal game and do not suddenly take risks. Keep your flight partner’s scorecard carefully, because in a tournament you mark each other. And most importantly: enjoy it. No one expects a perfect round from a beginner – most people remember their first tournament above all for the friendly people and the atmosphere afterwards.
