Golf and Health: Why Golf Is So Good for Body and Mind
Golf is more than a hobby – it keeps you fit, lowers stress and connects people. What a round does for your health.
Some people still see golf as a leisurely pastime. Anyone who has walked 18 holes knows better. Golf gets you moving – physically and mentally – in a way that does a world of good, especially when everyday life is hectic. Here is why a round at Golfclub Niep does more for your health than you might think.
Exercise that does not feel like a workout
An 18-hole round means roughly eight to ten kilometres on foot – over gentle hills, through nature, with hundreds of swings in between. That quickly adds up to 10,000 steps and more, without a treadmill in sight. Because you are focused on your game, time flies and the exercise happens almost by itself. Carry your bag or pull a trolley and you add strength endurance and a solid calorie burn on top.
Fresh air and a clear head
Three to four hours outdoors is pure recovery. Time spent in green surroundings has been shown to lower stress, regulate blood pressure and lift your mood. On our course on the Lower Rhine, set within a nature reserve, you wind down: no screen, no deadlines, just you, the ball and the fairway. Many of our members say their round is the best way to clear their head.
Good for heart, joints and balance
Golf is a joint-friendly endurance sport. Brisk walking gently works your cardiovascular system without the impact of running. The swing trains your core, coordination and mobility, and constantly balancing on uneven ground sharpens your sense of balance – something that becomes increasingly valuable with age.
A sport for (almost) every age
The beauty of golf: you can start at twelve and still play at eighty. You set the pace and the intensity is easy to manage. That is exactly why golf is one of the few sports that can stay with you for life – keeping you active and part of the community.
Not to be underestimated: the social side
Health is more than movement. On the course and afterwards on the terrace, conversations, friendships and a sense of belonging grow. This social side is good for mental health – and one of the reasons golf connects people so well.
Curious? Our trial course lets you try out how golf feels with no obligation – and do your body and mind some good along the way.
